SATURDAY NIGHT SLEEPOUT

RAISING FUNDS FOR HOMELESS VETERANS

SLEEP OUT TICKET $ 20.00 PER PERSON FOR REGISTRATION

Start getting sponsors: Our Goal is a minimum of $100.00 per camper

A SLEEPOUTis a way to raise money and awareness for the homeless veterans by inviting participants to spend the night outside in a cardboard box for shelter.  Although we could never recreate the real-life experience of what it is like to be truly homeless, sleeping out for the night can focus all our thoughts on how we can all make a difference in the lives of the homeless veterans.

WHERE & WHEN?

The night of Saturday, February 29, 2020 through Sunday, March 1, at the North Olmsted VFW 7647 Post, behind parking lot.  Will start at 8:00 p.m. on Saturday night and will go until 8:00 a.m. on Sunday. Breakfast will be provided!

HOW CAN I GET INVOLVED?

You can participate by becoming a Camper, either solo or with a group.  Simply fill out the necessary forms (available at the post) and raise funds through Sponsorships from family, friends and businesses. Or you can be a Supporter by sponsoring a Camper! Only 50 campers can participate. So, get your registration in today!

DO I HAVE TO SLEEP OUT?

While we encourage everyone to try sleeping out for the night, people are more than welcome to come enjoy and observe the activities without sleeping out.

CAN ANYONE PARTICIPATE?
Absolutely, though anyone under 18 years old must have direct adult supervision (i.e., a parent or guardian) as well as a completed Parent/Guardian Agreement and consent form.

WHERE DO DONATIONS GO?

All monetary donations will go to the National Coalition for Homeless Veterans and all items or supplies donated will be given to the homeless shelters in our area.

CAMPER INFORMATION

Complete Sleepout Registration Form attached and turn in as soon as possible. Get a Box to sleep in.

Start getting sponsors: Our Goal is a minimum of $100.00 per camper.  Collect funds within one week after sleepout and turn into North Olmsted VFW Post 7647.  Share you experience with photos, videos and sleep stories with social media.

SETUP AND SURVIVAL TIPS:

1.     Place a tarp and a layer or two of cardboard underneath your box.  Insulating yourself from the ground is more important than insulating from cold air.

2.     Use a winter weight sleeping bag and don’t forget your pillow.

3.     Wear a warm hat, preferably wool, all night. It will keep your feet warm too! Wear dray wool socks to bed but avoid the temptation to wear too many layers of clothing or a coat inside your sleeping bag.  Your body heat will warm the sleeping bag for you.  Cinching up your mummy bag so that only your eyes, nose and mouth and exposed is another way to hold in heat.

4.     Don’t breathe into your sleeping bag at night. Breathe through a stocking cap or bandana instead.  Moisture from your breath will introduce moisture in your sleeping bag and rescue it insulating ability.

5.     Put a bottle of warm water in the foot of your sleeping bag.  It will keep your feet warm during the night.  Be sure it is sealed tight, doesn’t leak, and is not wet on the outside. You can place it inside a Ziplock bag if you are unsure of the seal.

6.     Bring your significant other along and zip your bags together.  Shared body heat will help to keep you both warm and cozy.

7.     Do some mild exercise before getting into your sleeping bag.  Jog or do some light calisthenics to increase circulation.  It will help you to warm up and warm your sleeping bag quicker.  DO NOT work up a sweat, as moisture is the enemy of warmth.

8.     If you have an equipment failure, get wet, or find that your equipment is not adequate, do not hesitate to move back inside and complete the night in your own bed.  Better to error on the side of caution then to suffer frostbite or exposure.

DRESSING TIPS:

1.     Dress in layers so you can easily adjust your clothes to regulate body moisture and temperature: a liner against your skin (long johns), insulation (fleece), and a water and wind-proof outer shell.

2.     Wool or synthetic materials are much better than cotton, which loses its insulating qualities when it gets wet.  Cotton also takes a long time to dry out.

3.     Wear boots with waterproof outer shells such as oiled leather or plastic.

4.     Protect against heat los through your head by wearing a wool cap, toboggan, balaclava, etc.  Over half of your body heat can be lost through your head.  A balaclava helps protect your face and neck from cold and wind.  It can also be worn as a toboggan or scarf while sitting around your campfire.

5.     Wear wool socks, but don’t wear too many pairs. If the flood flow to your feet becomes constricted, your feet will get cold regardless of how many socks you have on. Boot laces are too tight will constrict the blood flow as well.

6.     Make sure your gloves, especially liners, are not too tight so they don’t constrict the blood flow and keep your hands from warming up.

WHAT NOT TO BRING:

Be mindful of what not to bring.  Do not bring money, laptops, or tablets. No food is to be delivered, be mindful of others.  No cooler of any kind.  We will not be responsible for theft or loss of possessions.  KEEP YOUR KEYS IN A SAFE PLACE ALONG WITH PHONE! All beverages are to be concealed in a brown paper bag!

AUTHORIZED TO BRING:

Sleeping bag, blankets, pillow, flashlight, cell phone to share your experience, plastic sheeting for lying under your box, a lawn chair for sitting around bonfire and don’t forget your box!

BOX:

Please feel free to decorate your box any way you would like!  You can even make condos by hooking other people’s boxes to your own.  Be creative!!! There is also a Best Box Contest, don’t forget to register for it!

RULES:

All campers must have their box in their designated spot and be all set up by 8:00 p.m.  You may arrive as early as 7:00 p.m. to start the set-up process.

All boxes and belongings must be removed by premises on Sunday March 1, 2020 by 9:30 a.m.

Once situated on your designated box location, you cannot go back and forth to parked vehicles in the parking lots.

No profanity, no abusive language, no public intoxication, no weapons of any kind, no fighting, etc.

No loud noise after 11:00 p.m. due to the neighboring properties.  We are a guest on the property of the VFW Post 7647 and will mind our manners
